Exhibition Case Study: The Golden Age
Overview
This project challenged us to design an exhibition centered around posters. Any theme or subject of our choosing, but had to include 20 posters. I chose to explore The Golden Age of Cinema in the United States. A revolutionary period in film history that introduced color, musical numbers, and unforgettable actors.
Concept Development- Mood-board, Color, and Typography
I was inspired by the title cards seen in these films. All with elegant, hand drawn typefaces. All in which gave the viewer a sense of what the film would be about. Then I thought about the color used in these films. Movies were being released in technicolor, and i was mostly inspired by Singin in the rain, its lovely colors throughout the movie musical, it just makes what the Golden Age was. Even the plot is about the Golden Age, the turn of black and while silents to brightly musicals and sound! To reflect the theatrical nature of this period, I designed the visual identity with bold, cinematic typography and a warm, nostalgic palette. This created a strong connection to the era's original movie posters. I played around with various typefaces for the retro look, and worked on the tagline that would be used for the exhibition.
Concept Development- Poster Selection
The main point of this project was the inclusion of 20 posters. I went ahead and decide to choose films that were mostly musicals of course. And had a relative color scheme in all of them. Of course there were a variety of poster releases based on cities, countries, and theatrical releases.
Logo Design
Two variations, on the happy cinema theme.
Poster Design
The centerpiece of the exhibition branding was a series of posters. I did not know how to establish such multitude of posters. But i thought about it could look like a reel of film, and each part showcases a snippet of the poster, either the face of the main actor of the film or illustration aspect of the film.
Rough sketch on how the poster could look like, plus the website planning.
Here were the variation's on the “ film reel” shape. I didn’t know how to depict such a wave, it would come out to stack, and not have a flow between the posters. I also worked around with the captions and information, but it looked best normal and static. My instructor gave me a tip to draw out the curve first, and work with that as a template. Indesign is a friend with its shape box tool, I was able to adjust each anchor point and finally create my film wave. The third poster design is what lead to the final design.
Final Poster Design
Exhibition Extras
A website to support the exhibition, featuring: A digital archive of the posters, An about info of the exhibtion, and film synopses
Large flags were designed for outdoor promotion. These echo the poster designs and create visual continuity from street to gallery.
As a final addition to the museum store, I proposed a vinyl record that complements the exhibition’s focus on film and music. As a passionate theater fan and vinyl collector myself, I’ve always appreciated physical media. This vinyl would feature selected musical scores from the films highlighted in the exhibition, tying the experience together through sound.
